Results from the 2021 Multi-Wavelength Campaign of Major Flaring of Cygnus X-3
Abstract
In the fall of 2021 Cygnus X-3 experienced an extended quenched/hypersoft state (soft/high). In the middle of this state there were a series of hard X-ray flares (8 flares each with a 3-4 day duration) with accompanying gamma-ray and radio (reaching 10 Jy) emission. The last time this type of activity was seen was in 2006. At the end of this outburst, approximately a month in duration, Cygnus X-3 returned to a quenched state. In this presentation we will give the result of Fermi (gamma-ray), Swift/BAT (hard X-ray), NICER (X-ray), SMA (submillimeter), and AMI (radio) observations. We will examine the nature and time variations of the X-ray continuum and X-ray lines as a function of activity and orbital phase. We will also examine the submillimeter polarization which show unique behavior that is seen in another class of objects (Blazars).
